Fire Protection Do’s & Don’ts

You don’t want to take any risks when selecting a fire alarm system for your business. Ensuring there is in place a functional fire suppression system is the first step you’ll need to take, but you’ll also have to take the time to check the following to make sure your company – property and workforce – have the protection they need.
Fire Extinguishers
These valuable protection tools are the most essential items you can use should a fire break out. Never place commercial fire extinguishers more than 75 feet away from your employees, and also near the exits so they are easily accessible should an incident occur.
Your extinguishers will need to be professionally inspected on a year basis, and you should have an in-house inspection done monthly. Employees will need to be familiar with the P.A.S.S. (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) operation procedure, and if not, contact the local fire department or fire safety company for training.
Emergency Lights & Exit Signs
The building’s exit lights should at all times be illuminated, and they, along with emergency lights, should be tested on a regular basis. If during the test they don’t come on, get in touch with a fire suppression company to have a through inspection done.
Fire Alarms
Many municipalities regulate commercial properties’ fire alarm systems to receive maintenance on a periodic basis. The firm responsible for maintenance should check smoke detectors, horns, strobes, sprinklers, etc. If repairs need to be made, then they should be done at the time.
