Taking Care of Business: Fire Safety for Your Company

Solving problems, helping customers, building up a client base — all of these are everyday activities in the average business. Each day you collect information from these, and other business related activities that help you add to your knowledge and procedures. In addition to the information you have collected, your business also depends on the people and products you have. Consequently, it is important that you protect it against fire, flood, etc., as you do not want to lose people or information. One way you can do this is by implementing basic fire safety procedure into your business.

No matter the size of your business, it is important that you have a fire suppression system in place. Today, there are several fire suppression systems available. These systems are designed to automatically turn on when a fire is detected or they will automatically engage when a certain temperature is achieved. Having a fire suppression system installed is the most vital step you can take to protect your people and product.

Of course, having a fire suppression system in place is mandatory in public location, but there are other things you can do to ensure fire safety measures are being employed. These fire safety activities include the following:
  • Take time each month to inspect your Ohio fire suppression systems and fire extinguishers to make sure they are working properly and are up to code.
  • Create and practice an evacuation plan. Be sure the routes are posted where employees and customers can see them. When practicing the evacuation plan, be sure everyone understands their responsibilities.
  • Fire safety also includes taking care of your computer and electronics. Be sure that you are giving breathing room to computer and electrical equipment so that they do not overheat. Take care to not crush cords under or between furniture and, as much as feasible, unplug electronics when not in use.
  • Become a smoking-free business or have a designated area with trashcans designed for disposing of the cigarette butts.
  • Increase fire safety by placing fire extinguishers throughout your business and schedule regular inspections by a licensed inspector. Also, have people within your company who have been trained to know how to properly use the extinguishers.
Fire safety is something that everyone can be a part of. By taking these simple fire safety measures, you can keep your employees, clientele, equipment and records safe.
